World Population Stats and Live Demographic Estimate

The UN doesn't actually count every person every second. Instead, demographers combine national censuses, birth and death registries, and migration data to estimate the population on a reference date (here, 1 July 2024) and project forward.

The ticker takes that baseline, applies the annual growth rate, and divides it across every second of the year.

Total population — the live extrapolation from the 2024 baseline.
Births today — running count since 00:00 UTC, using ~4.3 births per second worldwide.
Deaths today — running count since 00:00 UTC, using ~2.05 deaths per second.
Net today — births minus deaths so far today.

Real-world births and deaths aren't evenly distributed across the day, so treat these as smooth averages, not exact moments.

Population growth shapes nearly every long-term human concern: food and water demand, energy use, urbanisation, schooling, healthcare, and climate impact. Watching the rate slow down over time tells the demographic transition story more clearly than any single year.
